Bilateral clubfoot - both feet cast at once?

Just found out our baby has bilateral clubfoot (both feet). 20 week scan showed it clearly. We've got our first appointment at the hospital next month.

Do they usually cast both feet at the same time? How do you even hold a baby with two casts?? Any bilateral parents here?

Hi! Bilateral mum here 🙋‍♀️ Yes they cast both feet at the same time. Its daunting but honestly its fine. The hardest part is nappy changes because you basically have to lift the whole lower half by the casts!

My son had bilateral and is now 2, running around like a maniac. You'd never know 💙

Both feet at once! Sounds scary but it means treatment is done in one go rather than dragging it out. Our daughter had bilateral - 6 casts simultaneously, tenotomy on both sides, then boots and bar.

Tip: get a car seat with good leg room. We had to upgrade ours because the casts didnt fit in the newborn one.

Bilateral clubfoot occurs in approximately 50% of cases, so your experience is shared by many families. Both feet are typically treated simultaneously with Ponseti method, which is actually quite efficient.

The outcomes for bilateral clubfoot treated with Ponseti are excellent. Try to stay positive 💙
